The CRAFS team discussded with Yen Bai provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on scaling out the climate-smart village model

On the 14th February 2022, the CRAFS team had a meeting with Mr. Dinh Dang Luan, the director general of Yen Bai’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), at Yen Bai DARD. The CRAFS team briefed Mr. Luan on achievements of research projects that the team implemented in Yen Bai in 2021. Since 2019, the CRAFS team has been conducting research and development (R&D) activities within the VIBE 2018.05 project (2019-2022) funded by the Embassy of Ireland in Hanoi and the NTM project (1/2020-6/2021) funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). In collaboration with Yen Bai DARD and districts, four climate-smart villages (CSV) were established for implementation of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) in two out of three agroecologies of the province. These projects significantly contributed to enhanced climate resilience and productivity in some climate-vulnerable rural areas of Yen Bai. In 2021 alone, the CRAFS team successfully set up 2 CSVs in Van Yen and Van Chan districts, helping scale the CSV work for CSA implementation to more rural communities.

According to Mr. Dinh Dang Luan, there are nine district administrative units in Yen Bai, including Yen Bai city, Nghia Lo town; 07 districts of Tram Tau, Mu Cang Chai, Van Chan, Van Yen, Luc Yen, Tran Yen, and Yen Binh. Among a total of 173 communes, 70 upland and 62 extremely difficult communes receive support from national socio-economic programs.  Tram Tau and Mu Cang Chai are among 61 poorest and marginalized districts of Vietnam. He hoped to receive more support from CRAFS in terms of converting research achievements into development outcomes and impacts in Yen Bai province.

The CRAFS team presented a joint work plan from the team’s ongoing research projects in 2022 so interdisciplinary and cooperative synergies can be best achieved for maximizing research outcomes and impacts for development. Main R&D priority areas of CRAFS remain crop and livestock production, climate resilience enhancement. In 2022, the team will generate more CSV evidence through creating 06 more CSVs in the 06 remaining districts of Yen Bai city, Nghia Lo town, Luc Yen, Tran Yen, Tram Tau, and Mu Cang Chai to complete a CSV map for Yen Bai. Furthermore, CRAFS will collaborate with the NUI Galway partner to integrate all R&D findings into a GIS-based spatial decision support system (SDSS) through the COALESCE/2020/34 project (funded by the Irish Research Council) in assisting making decisions and plans for CSA prioritization and implementation within a proven CSV framework. This SDSS will be delivered to Yen Bai DARD, district governments and the National Target Program on New Rural Development (MARD) for implementation at scales.
